This week the OOC had the opportunity to inspect the office of Mr. Ted Bechtol, Superintendent of the Capitol Grounds. While there, Mr. Bechtol shared the story of the impressive table in the conference room.
According to Mr. Bechtol, Senator John F. Kennedy called the tree the 'Humility Elm' because it had a low overhanging branch which one had to duck under when walking from the Russell Senate Office Building to the Capitol. The trunk has about 120 annual rings taking the tree back to Civil War times. It took 8 Architect of the Capitol (AOC) arborists and masons to set it up.
This week has been a busy one for OOC staff as they continue inspecting the AOC’s Capitol Grounds.
